Camera’s light meter is main subject to be known by photographer to get accurate exposure. It determine shutter speed and aperture.

Digital Light Meter

A handheld digital incident-light meter

Light meter of camera is main subject which determine shutter speed and aperture the camera. Knowing how the digital camera’s light meter is critical to get accurate exposure. Light meters options include center-weighted and spot metering, zone or matrix, and partial. These meters have conditions of lighting subject for which they excel or fail. Photographer intuition will improve by understanding these meters.

Light meter of all in-camera have a fundamental lack. Camera’s light meter can only measure light that reflected by subject. So the best way to get nice photo is guess how much light that hit the photo subcjet.

In camera, light meter is determined based on light luminance which reflected from a photo object appear as middle gray. These provision caused by variety of reflectance the real object that are not have same percentage of incident light. If we are directs our camera to lighter object, the camera’s light meter will calculate over exposure. Otherwise, if we directs to darker object, the camera’s light meter calculate under exposure. We could use a hand light meter for comparing camera’s light meter.

The printing industry know the middle gray as density of ink which reflect 18% of incident light. Photography have default middle gray between 10-18% reflectance. Camera’s light meter will calculate well if there are photo object that have diverse of reflectance. The photo object must have varying reflectance from dark to light. It are make light meter is on roughly middle gray.

There are photo object that have inbalance reflectance such as white object in the snow or the black bird around a pile of rubbish. We would so difficult to take these object. For this case, we could try to create an image on camera with a histrogram whose primary peak is in the midtones, even though, in general case it should not be done.
